Palabras al viento (Words in the Wind)
PALABRAS AL VIENTO (WORDS IN THE WIND)
co-presented with Deborah Elias Danza Española
Performances Friday-Sunday, April 15-17, 2011
Tickets $10 advance, students, seniors; $12 door

Deborah Elias takes the lush and thrilling beauty of flamenco into a place where time, memory, dreams, and ecstatic events unfold. The words of Federico García Lorca fly off the page into the beautiful song of La Conja and the exquisitely haunting notes of guitarist Ben Abrahamson. Embodying the ephemeral and the palpable, Palabras al viento is as rich in heart-felt beauty as it is in earthy, rhythmic flamenco. Audience and performers travel together on this visceral and emotional journey.

Palabras al viento explores the life and poetry of one of Spain’s most beloved writers, Federico García Lorca, whose beautiful images and evocative emotions embody the soulful and intense character of his native Andalucía (southern Spain – the birthplace of flamenco) while also exploring universal themes of time, love, identity, childhood, sex, and death. In Palabras al viento, the essence of Lorca’s life and poetry is distilled into a rich concentrate of words, visual images, movements, and music, with the traditional elements of flamenco (guitar, song, and dance) combined with elements of jazz and Arabic music, modern dance, and poetry as well as projections, lighting, and sound effects to create a unique piece that is at once modern and ancient, intellectual and earthy.
