SASE: The Write Place

Carolyn Holbrook
Founder, SASE: The Write Place

SASE: The Write Place was founded by Carolyn Holbrook in the fall of 1993 in response to a need for a writer's organization that was affordable, accessible, and easy-to-find for writers of diverse cultural and social backgrounds.

SASE (pronounced "sassy") spent more than 13 years making the literary arts accessible to a culturally and socially-economically diverse community. Intermedia Arts is committed to upholding that tradition.

On May 31, 2006, SASE: The Write Place merged with Intermedia Arts! The merger has been hailed as a brilliant move by many in the arts community who've seen nonprofit organizations close their doors or struggle to stay afloat in the wake of legislative cuts to the arts and increasing competition for donor support.

Intermedia Arts has rooted itself in the Twin Cities as a gathering place where the arts engage community members to build connections, both locally and globally. Since 1973 our innovative approach to the arts has inspired communities toward social change. We are nationally recognized for our successful education and leadership programs, unique services to artists and multidisciplinary public exhibitions. Our mission is to be a catalyst that builds understanding among people through the arts.

Our new Literary Programs Manager, Julie Bates, is working closely with SASE founder Carolyn Holbrook to ensure that the literary programs and community SASE built continue to grow and develop at Intermedia Arts.

"While mergers can be tricky business, this combination is exciting because SASE and Intermedia share a passion to intertwine art with the lives of people and the community." -Neal Cuthbert, Arts Program Director at the McKnight Foundation
