June 29-September 9, 2006

Building on last year's wildly success festival, Intermedia Arts is proud to present the second annual B-Girl Be: A Celebration of Women in Hip-Hop, a multimedia festival encompassing the four elements of hip-hop--MCing, DJing, breakdancing, graffiti--and more. The mission of B-Girl Be is to open doors to the Twin Cities community of all ages and cultures to celebrate the accomplishments of women in all elements of hip-hop culture. This annual event is a place to make connections, build confidence, sharpen skills and to gain access to the tools to create music, film, poetry, rap, aerosol art and dance.

On June 29, 2006 B-Girl Be kicks off with the B-Girl Be Summit, a multidisciplinary summit that brings together international, national and local girls and women in hip-hop to Minneapolis for dialogues, art-making, screenings, performances, workshops and networking opportunities. This four-day summit (June 29-July 2) showcases women through live performances, fashion, films, videos, workshops and panels.

The Summit features national and international guests aerosol artists Lady Pink (NYC), MUCK (NYC), FAITH47 (South Africa), ZORI4 (Puerto Rico), Femme 9 (Kansas City), SILOETTE (Phoenix), TOOFLY (New York); Medusa, "The Angela Davis of Hip-Hop" (LA); DJ Pam the Funkstress (San Francisco) and Hip-Hop Ambassador Toni Blackman (NYC); B-Girls ASIA ONE (LA), Rokafella (NYC), B-Girl GENESIS (Amsterdam), B-Girl Danielle (London) and B-Girl Morgana (Sao Paolo); keynote speaker Dr. Roxanne Shanté; and photojournalist/ historian Martha Cooper, who will perform, present and engage in panel discussions and workshops alongside local Twin Cities artists.

The celebration continues throughout July and into August with an international visual art exhibition, workshops and dialogues. The exhibit features art created by women involved in and influenced by hip-hop culture. These artists--from South Minneapolis to South Africa--paint on walls, wood, clothing, vinyl, canvas, metal and more. Inside Intermedia Arts’ main gallery, viewers can check out aerosol art, clothing, paintings, photographs, sculpture, and illustrations representing hip-hop inspired artwork from women from around the world. The exhibit runs through September 9, 2006. Gallery is open Monday-Saturday from 12-5 PM.

B-Girl Be will include two-weeks of workshops for young women from July 10-21, 2006. These exploratory workshops will introduce young women in the Twin Cities area to aerosol art, rap, hip-hop dance and digital media.

B-Girl Be is presented in partnership with Juxtaposition Arts, The Hip Hop Association, Emetrece Productions, Full Circle Soul and We B'Girlz, is sponsored by Target, Scion, Best Buy, City Pages, Moxie Salon, Pizza Luce, Red Bull, AirForce NutriSoda and Holiday Inn Minneapolis Metrodome with additional support from the St Paul Traveler's Arts and Diversity Fund, The Medtronic Foundation, Beim Foundation, Ford Foundation, Fredrikson & Byron and The Women’s Foundation of Minnesota.
