| Jill Rothenberger (aktuit) has been crafting
art on paper, canvas, concrete, and found objects for over 15 years. She
draws inspiration from music, community involvement, and working with youth.
She is also inspired to create out of the frustration and wonder of living
in a world where art is marginalized. She believes strongly in the right
to public space and the strength found in collaborative networks. Jill spent
seven years living in Seattle WA where she worked with the Arts Corps and
ArtWorks organizations as well as taught a junior high art class in West
Seattle. While living in Seattle Jill also participated in several murals,
including one in which she was the lead organizer and grant negotiator for
over 30 artists. These artists of all ages filled a 960ft. long x 20ft.
tall city wall with amazing creativity and success. The experience solidified
her passion for community art that encourages people and especially youth
to express their personal stories and display their talents. Jill sees raw
power in the act of taking things into your own hands, standing up to bureaucracy
and making something new out of what’s in front of you. She believes
in taking part, in actively creating our communities and streets rather
than just consuming status quo. This summer she will be working with a team
of mural artists in Seattle on several public and private projects as well
as custom painting cars and bikes.
