Angelilah

Angelilah creates from a Caribbean sensibility grounded in the now, drawing as much from the greenery of Puerto Rico’s countryside as the heterogeneity and freedom of the large cities of the world. From a very young age, she beheld the remnants of southern town Ponce’s old criollo traditions, as well as the delights of rural life in the town of the indigenous town of Utuado.

Perhaps her most important work in this field was with Puerto Rican singer / songwriter Draco, with whom she worked as Production Coordinator for his studio sessions, and as assistant Musical Supervisor for an independent film. Also with Draco, Angelilah had the opportunity to found www.phantomvox.com, a website that provides an online exhibition space for emerging artists in Puerto Rico. Angelilah is also known as Gitana, the feminine voice on Hip Hop Vox FM, which is the first and only radio show in Puerto Rico dedicated entirely to hip hop music and culture. Likewise, in response to the lack of support for hip hop artists in Puerto Rico, and especially for the women who participate in the culture, Angelilah also incorporated recently Fundación Mujeres En Las Artes (MELA.), a foundation aiming to encourage girls in Puerto Rico to pursue the arts and to serve as a support system to emerging female artists.
