I was born and raised in south Minneapolis.
I grew up on my big brother’s records, Grand Master Flash and the
Furious Five, Public Enemy, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, NWA and Ice Cube;
and my parents’ social justice and anti-war politics and actions.
Overtime I developed my own values, taste, and style but hip-hop and activism
have stayed a constant foundation. I have been drawing and painting since
I could hold a pen, I started painting on walls and writing my name on
things 13 year ago. I love graffiti and always will, but the gender imbalance
always drove me crazy. I was lucky to meet and paint with some amazing
women writers. I was a founding member of my current crew and I have pushed
to put additional girls in the crew and maintain a feminist perspective
and positive images and interactions with women in all of my crewmembers’
art and actions. In the last two years I have been putting time into indoor
art as well after a 7-year hiatus in part due to similar frustrations
with male domination in the gallery art world. My art is urban and feminist,
graffiti influenced and all of it has political undertones or often times
overtones. |
