Edwin Beylerian (Curator, Selection Panelist)
Edwin Beylerian was born in 1943 and raised in Lebanon. He was a member of the local Armenian refugee community in a land that has seen many eastern and western influences over centuries. He completed a Master's degree in Biology at the American University of Beirut as an Entomology major in 1964. He came to the University of Minnesota in 1966 to pursue a Ph.D. in that field but ended up following his first love by studying Fine Arts at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and graduating in 1974. He has been working for twenty years as a calligrapher, illustrator, print, multimedia, animation and Web designer. In 1975 he was one of the artists chosen to inaugurate the Minnesota Artists' Exhibition Program at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. In 2003, he was part of a three -artist show at the California Building Gallery in Minneapolis, along with Aribert Munzner, Professor Emeritus at MCAD and Malene Lüders, an emerging artist from Denmark. In 2000, he took part in "Beyond the Studio," a mentorship program for teaching artists sponsored by Intermedia Arts. He has been serving as an artist-in-residence in public schools, including Eden Prairie High School, White Bear Area Learning Center and at the Sheridan School in Minneapolis last year and this current school year. He also served as a member of the Minneapolis Arts Commission in 2000. He is now also serving as a member of Moving Lives Speakers Bureau sponsored by Intermedia Arts and Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights.
