| Sankara Djeki (Signature Graphic Designer Immigrant Status Contributions and Retrospective) was born in Douala, Cameroon, a city located by the Atlantic Ocean in Central Africa. He spent his childhood and teenage years between France and Cameroon. His ethnic group is the Douala people/Bantu group, who were mostly fishermen, artists, writers, and activists. As musicians, they created and popularized the African dance rhythm Makossa. "My work is based on movement . . . like a dance. I call this style 'matila na musiki' (writing in music)." His wife, Carmen Elate, an art teacher for Twin Cities public schools, values creative interaction with their children. "Doing art around my family influences my artwork including space, time and choice of materials." His tape art (used for designing the signature graphic for this year's edition of Immigrant Status) was partly inspired by playing with his son Malik. |
