Karen HeaChung LyuMusic & Performance
"As a multi-genre artist, I now focus on creative freedom and compassionate community in every creative project I do. I am primarily a singer and also explore many other art forms. "In 1997, when I visited South Korea for the first time since I was 4 years old, I found a new connection to Korea and being Korean that had somehow eluded me while I was growing up in Southern California, Texas, Minnesota and Iowa, even though I lived with my Korean parents and brother (and sometimes my grandparents), and went to Korean Seventh-Day Adventist churches. "Since 1998, when I started my Global Jazz band, I have sought to honor my Korean heritage and have grown to accept my Koreanness." Karen Lyu is a fiscal year 2007 recipient of a Cultural Community Partnership grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. |
